Astrantia 'Roma', Dahlia Arabian Night, David Austin Roses, in a vase on Monday, Persicaria amplexicaulis Firetail, Rose 'Gertrude Jekyll', rose a shropshire lad, Verbena bonariensis
Monday is here again and I am sharing a seasonal mix of what I think of as an early summer bloom, Astrantia Roma, summer roses and autumnal dahlias. Such is our weather
These were all planted this year and I am very pleased with progress. The astrantias were slow to pull away but once they did they have more than tripled their size. Such a charming cushion of a bloom, perfect for a vase and an essential for a garden border to my mind.
The roses are A Shropshire Lad and Gertrude Jekyll . Both are David Austin roses, both are pink and both smell divine. This is their second show of flowers.
The Dahlia Arabian Night is a stunner, dark velvet perfection.
Added to this little group is Percy. This Percy is Firetail, Persicaria amplexus Firetail and Verbena bonariensis. I am happy with this little group and hope you like them too. Have a great week and be sure to check out the Monday vases with Cathy at https://ramblinginthegarden.wordpress.com/2015/
I love the dark reds with that tinge of pink in your vase this week….still hoping my dahlias give me a few blooms before the frost comes.
I wonder why they haven’t ? Did they go in the ground late?
Now what happens if you had another variety of persicaria – Percy2, Percy3, etc?! You have found a lovely combination of pinks Dorris and I am pleased your astrantias are doing well in their first year. I had some small plants from Hayloft last year and they are barely establishing now, but at least my Roma has got a couple of PINK flowers now instead of white! I cut all my astrantia down once they get tatty and get a second fresh flush which is lovely to see. Your roses are gorgeous and accentuate the other pinks in your vase – definitely not overly pink though! Thanks for sharing
Ha, great idea, absolutely! Glad your Roma haw shown through in pink now or that would be very annoying. The astrantia seem to be enjoying my heavy soil, just hope they survive a wet winter.
What a lovely vibrant pink arrangement. Plush I would say!
‘Plush’ is a good word for them.
Gorgeous, rich colors. Dahlia ‘Arabian Night’ is a stunner. I would love every single one of your flowers in my own garden – they are so lovely!
Thanks Eliza, the garden is making a good start.
What an amazing seasonal mix, Dorris. That Dahlia is dramatic! I love Astrantia and wish I could grow them – in any season.
Percy’s colour and form works so well with the other flowers. Nice to see verbena used too, it’s almost irridescent.
Thanks Kate, who can resist the many charms of Verbena.
I’m mad about Percy, from a massive annual version I saw recently with Dorris, at the Specialist Plant Nursery in Great Missenden, which towered above us; to the wide range of perennial forms. They are a recent discovery and I am a passionate convert. They are reliable, have a long season and add interesting texture to the flower border.
Your arrangement this week looks luscious and is a good reminder that a little bit of summer is still hanging in there!
The annual version which we saw is known in some circles as ‘kiss me over the gate’.Could i just add with a step ladder! We had never seen it before and it was written about recently at https://thebikinggardener.wordpress.com/kiss-me-over-the-garden-gate-in-your-own-time
‘Arabian Night’ has such deep, velvety color – very appealing.
I love all your late summer shades of pink Dorris.
How are you getting on with the garden? I am looking forward to seeing what you have done.
