52 Week Photo Challenge, Buddleia davidii with red admiral, immigrant, native, red admiral, referendum, shasta daisy with red admiral butterfly, vanessa atalanta
One of the best things about the garden in Summer is visiting butterflies. This is the familiar Red Admiral Butterfly which some might think is native to England, it is in fact an immigrant.
Thanks largely to our warmer climate, hard to quite believe given the inclement weather this week, Vanessa atalanta/ Red Admiral now hibernates over Winter and is a familiar sight.
As the referendum looms, I thought it topical to include an immigrant which has made made Britain its home.
This is my entry for the photo challenge this week, hosted by Sandra at https://daffodilwild.wordpress.com

A very interesting take on the subject Dorris. I didn’t know the Red Admiral is not native butterfly – fascinating – thank you.

These are always the first butterflies to appear in spring. Beautiful photos.

Hi Chloris Have you seen any this year? I haven’t yet. Too wet perhaps.

Wonderful photos, I like the topical spin too. How interesting to hear that it’s only more recently been overwintering in the UK. We see a lot of them and their chrysalis here, the first of last year’s were back in flight in early spring before the April frosts put them off. Not seen any recently though.

Nor me, I have yet to see one this year. Probably thanks to the incessant showers

The Red Admiral has visited me also. I Instagrammed one last week in my polytunnel that had a bit of its lower wing missing as well as a small hole in it. Seemed to be flying about just fine though. How perfect that yours would be perched on a buddleja, also known as butterfly bush. Lovely and very interesting post Dorris.

Thank you for your nice comments. I wonder if she was keeping warm in your poly tunnel? We have had so much rain this week.

I think so, and perhaps she was also escaping the stiff breezes outside. It was my pleasure to visit you and I shall return 🙂

We get these butterflies also. I put some rue in the herb garden because it is supposed to be a host plant for them – but no caterpillars so far.
