It is 1800hrs and I have quickly taken some pictures in the garden. The light is still too bright for good photos but unless I leave things for another two or three hours, there will be no discernible difference. May has officially been the driest on record and we have had the sunniest Spring since 1929.

Joining our host The Propagator and other bloggers from round and about, here are my quick six for this, the last Saturday in May.

Nigella and Allium christophii

The Allium Purple sensation has finished and the A christophii are stepping up next. A steely or metallic looking pale purple, these are bigger than Purple Sensation but shorter. In the foreground is the first of my Nigellas.

I love annuals. I love it when they self seed and appear where they choose. One packet of seed, costing a couple of quid can give years of joy.

Penstemon

I thought my garden might be too cold, too exposed and too heavy for these lovely perennials. Planted in a raised bed to help drainage I leave it long and shaggy all winter, resisting the urge to tidy up until April. Dark claret bells are quietly forming. Yay!

Sambucus Black Lace

This is a shrub I would not be without. I love the deeply divided, dark foliage, the froth of flowers and dark berries. To encourage more foliage, I cut it back by a third each spring.

Clematis Annabelle

I have admired herbaceous clematis for many years and finally I have introduced Arabella into my borders. Rather than climbing, she will scramble through the borders. Neat, tidy, single, purple flowers. I am so pleased to introduce this to my garden. From Westcountry Nurseries (north Devon) ltd.

Top ten Blooms for March

Chloris invites us to share our top ten blooms with her on the 23rd of each month. Although today is the 27th I want to share my top ten with her and you as I know she won’t mind too much that I am a couple of days late. So here they are in all their blooming glory:

Prunus Nipponica Ruby. This is a new tree in my garden a dwarf form and I am delighted by its blossom.

Philadelphus aurea This mock orange was included in my garden as I love this foliage. A fresh bright lime which stands out amongst all other green leafed shrubs. Not yet fully grown the leaves are opening swiftly now.

Bulbs are in full show right now well apart from the tulips who are coming slowlyTulip Ballerina I think.

This is the crazy and eccentric Allium schubertii . Just appearing.

Blue and white Hyacinths are filling the air with their heady aroma. I have these in raised beds to avoid my very heavy clay.

The marmite of bulbs? Perhaps. Grape hyacinth growing happily under the Hornbeam hedge.

Then there is this:

A single blue beauty. I do not what it is Chloris. It piggy backed from a garden who gave me a couple of Hellebores. I hope it stays and makes a few friends.

This may look a bit like Aquilegia but it is Thalictrum Elin. I adore Thalictrum and this one will be around 1.2m tall by Summer.

As Cow parsley pulls away so too is this dark leaf version, Anthriscus sylvestris Ravenswing.

In a vase on Monday: Schubertii

This is what I have in my vase today, the husk of Allium schubertii

I rather like the name as it makes me think of a conductor waving his arms in all patterns of the music.

I have it sat on a glass shelf with a selection of beach finds.

So not much of an arrangement but from the garden nonetheless. I am of course joining Cathy with her weekly meme. Join in or take a look. It’s a good start to the week. D.
