Hellebore, Hellebore v, Helleborus orientalis 'Harvington Hybrids', March, Spring flowers, Tuesday View

The snow has melted. Colour has replaced the monochrome scene. These are the Hellebores that have survived the weather in my garden.

Hellebore viridis

Hellebore niger

Hellebore Harvington double

Hellebore hybrid from Barnhaven Primroses classified as ‘open pollinated’ Hellebores. It is rather a pot luck way to purchase Hellebores but this one is a new favourite. I especially like the colour.

Hellebore orientalis (Gwladys)

Finally this newly transferred, highly freckled one is from Gwladys Tonge’s garden, identity unknown but forever called Gwladys in my garden.

This is Hellebore season and social media is full of yummy pictures of them. If you need another fix take at look Cathy on her March post as she has joined Chloris with her monthly post to review what is looking good in the month. So many lovely plants.

Have a good day. D.

black stem vase, Christmas rose, Hellebore, helleborus niger, in a vase on Monday, pink flowers, Viburnum bodnantense dawn, winter scent

Last Monday I shared memories of Summer which some of you may have looked at and thought ‘yuck’, they were rather brown. With that in mind I cut some Viburnum  and a Hellebore at the same time. The Viburnum was in bud in the garden but tightly closed. ‘Ah ha’ I thought ( I did really think that exact expression), this could be good for next Monday.

This was taken last Tuesday:

As hoped, the buds have opened and are now filling the room with their rather overly sweet scent.

This is a first time appearance for the black glass stem vase. Part of a Christmas gift from Liz who had found it and a couple of others in a local charity shop. Perfect for my Mondays.
So today I have a tiny little burst of colour thanks to Christmas rose, Helleborus niger and Viburnum bodnantense Dawn.

There were no ah ha moments today but I expect many other contributors to Mondays vase will have lots of lovelies to share. Check out Cathys blog https://ramblinginthegarden.wordpress.com

This was taken yesterday:

Have a good week and let’s hope it stops raining. I am awash thanks to Thames Water, a burst water main, no mains drainage and heavy non stop rain today.

March the 1st.

Rabbits, rabbits, rabbits!

If only the weather was able to understand the significance of the date; it has been a dark, squally, wet morning here.
So to remind us of Spring proper here are a sample of Spring pictures to make you smile.

Hellebore, In a vase on Monday

Today I managed to get six whole hours in the garden before the rain took over and beat me back. Six whole hours, amazing.  One of the tasks I carried out was to remove last years leaves from the various Hellebores, now that their blooms are beginning to reveal themselves.

When I got home I got distracted and forgot to put together my vase for Monday. By now it was dark and so with torch in hand I carefully selected three flowers for my vase.

This vase is actually a 500ml chemistry flask and I chose it for the fact that its narrow neck supports the shy downward turning Hellebore heads and allows me to see them.

Hope you approve.  Stay cheerful in the midst of this ghastly stretch of wet weather.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Goodbye 2013

Autumn crocus, Bluebells, Buddleia davidii, Colchicum, Fatsia japonica variegata, fozen cow parsley, galanthus nivalis, Hellebore, japanese anenome, Malus red sentinel, Tulip

The weather today has been exceptionally foul and to distract myself I have flicked through my photographs. The thing that struck me is how beautiful plants are, no matter what the time of year is. Looking forward to another year in the garden, I thought I would share my pictures, a snap for each month. I hope you like them.
